10,000 police recruits to know their fate in May

Kenya: Some 10,000 police recruits will have to wait for three months for a verdict after Appeal Court judges concluded hearing a case challenging cancellation of the recruitment by the High Court.

A bench composed of justices John Mwera, Kathurima M'inoti and Wanjiru Karanja will give their verdict on the recruits' fate on May 8 after concluding hearing from all the parties in the case challenging Justice Isaac Lenaola's decision.

Justice Lenaola had last year ordered that the National Police Service Commission (NPSC) led by Johnston Kavuludi carry out a fresh exercise after the Independent Policing Oversight Authority sued Attorney General Githu Muigai over alleged irregularities in the recruitment process.

"I am satisfied that drastic action ought to be taken, painful or unpopular as it may be. That action ought to be a lesson to the NPSC and other constitutional organs," Lenaola ruled.
