Magistrates' jobs contested

Kenya: A decision by the Judiciary to recruit more chief and senior resident magistrates might be frustrated if a case filed at the High Court by an activist goes through.

The activist, Eric Orina through his lawyer Danstan Omari, claimed that the intended recruitment has barred serving judicial officers from applying for the positions, arguing the move is against the Constitution thus should be stopped.

In the case before High Court Judge Weldon Korir through a certificate of urgency, Mr Orina argues in his petition that serving magistrates will be locked out of the positions despite having been qualified. The case will be heard on February 16.
