State, landowners reach agreement on Lamu Port

Over 148 landowners who had gone to court to have the construction of the Lamu Port stopped were to start being paid last week, paving way for the commencement of the construction of the first three berths of the Sh2 trillion project.

The National Land Commission, which was brokering the deal between the landowners and the government, said an amount of Sh 365 million will be paid to the landowners.

"As we speak, we have agreed with all of them and they will even withdraw the case they had filed in court," said Muhammad Swazuri of the NLC.

The first phase of the compensation will benefit 249 people whose land is where the port will be put up.
