Workers at MMUST threaten to strike over alleged three years payment.

Kenya: Learning at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) will be paralysed early next year if workers will down their tools as planned.

Workers allied to Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) and Kenya Universities Staff Union (KUSU) have vowed to go on strike if the university's management will not have paid their salary arrears.

MMUST chapter chairman Robinson Oduma said the university owes its workers over Sh 60 million accumulated for the last three years.

Speaking to journalists in Kakamega town, he said the university management has been reluctant to address their grievances.

"The university management has not even bothered to reply to our letters asking them to meet union officials to address these issues. We have not been paid our money deducted from our salaries as bonus and other arrears" he said.

He said bonus payments are supposed to be paid every end of the year but they have not received it for the past three years.

"In the year 2012 we were only paid 25 per cent bonus, 2013 we received 50 per cent and this we have not received any payment as agreed. These payments must be done before this year ends to avoid industrial unrest when the university will be opening after December recess" he said.
