KPA boss Danson Mungatana roots for luxury cruise ships

News

Cruise ship

With the Kenyan Coast experiencing an influx of multibillionaire celebrities such as Italian businessman Flavio Briatore and supermodel Naomi Campbell (both expected here next month), the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) has plans to bring in modern luxury cruise ships to cater for such tourists.

According to KPA boss Danson Mungatana, the celebrity and tourists cruise ships associated with top tourist destinations are long overdue as “the Kenyan Coast is one of the best tourist attractions in the world tour calendar”.

“The plan is to develop a modern cruise terminal to spur growth of tourism. One cruise ship can bring in five times the number of tourists brought by a plane. Besides, we know that celebrities love such expeditions,” Mungatana told MondayBlues.

“We now have a modern port and we should do everything to maximise its potential to spur domestic growth. This will also help create job opportunities to the youth in Mombasa,” he added.

Top Hollywood stars and international tycoons are known to frequent Malindi, Lamu and the Chale Island in South Coast around this season. In fact, Briatore, the Italian billionaire who spends his Christmas holidays in Kenya, owns the world famous Lion in the Sun luxury resort in Malindi and has been flying in hundreds of tourists to the destination every year.
