Four police officers killed by speeding vehicle in Emali

Emali, Kenya: Four police officers were Tuesday night killed when a vehicle rammed onto a makeshift house in Emali Town, off Emali-Loitoktok road.

A fifth officer was injured and was transferred to a Nairobi hospital for further treatment.

The three died on the spot while one succumbed to her injuries Wednesday morning.

Seven other people are admitted in hospital following the 8pm accident.

Police said the officers were in a house near the roadblock when a speeding car crashed it .

The officers, who include three Administration Police officers, were manning a roadblock a few kilometres from Emali town when the accident happened, police said.

Area OCPD Gregory Muganda said the five officers, who had erected the roadblock, had retreated into an iron-roofed makeshift house and were warming themselves when an unmarked saloon car rammed into the makeshift house killing three officers on the spot.

The driver of the killer vehicle was later arrested in Kilome. The passengers in his car (a man, four women and two children) were admitted at Kilome Hospital in stable condition.

Reports say they drove off after the accident and did not bother to help those who had been injured. The number of the police officers who died in the accident is big and this is a blow to the service at large. Police boss David Kimaiyo said they are investigating the incident at large.
