Nandi Hills MP Alfred Keter backs calls for more funds to counties

Nandi Hills MP Alfred Keter has thrown his weight behind the Council of Governors’ push for referendum.

Addressing the press in Kericho town, Keter said Kenyans are now banking on county governments for development, courtesy of devolution, and, therefore, revenue allocation to the counties must be increased as per the governors’ demands.

“The entire county leadership must concur that we need Pesa Mashinani and should support programmes aimed towards that effect. We want to see resources adequately shared,” he said.

Keter said Jubilee leaders, led by President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto have in various public forums declared they are not opposed to an increment of revenue allocation to the counties, but faulted the government for not demonstrating real commitment to the pledges.

“If Jubilee government is serious about it, we should see a Bill tabled in Parliament that would seek to increase revenue allocation to the counties to at least 45 percent of the annual revenue collection,” he said.

The Nandi hills legislator at the same time said the Government must expedite disbursement of funds to the counties. “Governors cannot plan for county projects when they do not have funds in their accounts,” he said.
