How a revamped Arsenal could line up next season

Arsene Wenger has made Granit Xhaka his first signing of the summer but is determined to further add to his squad.

The Swiss midfielder became Arsenal's third most expensive signing ever, joining in a deal worth £30million including add-ons. But as MirrorFootball revealed yesterday, Wenger could more than double that spending before the transfer window closes at the end of August.

Arsenal scored the fewest Premier League goals of any top four side last season and Juventus striker Alvaro Morata remains a priority.

Wenger is desperate to add more firepower to his squad but the deal will be complicated by Real Madrid's buy-back clause, thought to be in the region of €30million (£22.75million).

A new centre-back is also on Wenger's short list, with Napoli's Senegal international Kalidou Koulibaly the preferred option.

The 24-year-old, who has also been watched by Chelsea and Manchester United, would cost around £20million.

Arsenal have also sent scouts to watch Atletico Madrid defender French Lucas Hernandez and Bolton's Rob Holding.

With fears that Kieran Gibbs could leave in the near future, Celtic left-back Kieran Tierney is being considered. They also want to relaunch a bid for teenage Argentine forward Maxi Romero of Velez Sarsfield.

So with the Gunners prepared to spend around £80million this summer, how could they line up next season?

Here are a few of the options...

Assuming an ideal summer for Arsenal that sees them secure all their primary transfer targets, as well as an absence of injuries to their squad, this is how Arsenal could line up next season.

Santi Cazorla was arguably Arsenal's most influential central midfielder before his injury and against weaker sides he could again line up in the middle alongside Xhaka. The Swiss midfielder, however, isn't a defensive midfield specialist (like Cazorla's previous partner Francis Coquelin) so it could leave them slightly exposed centrally.

With the poor form of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Theo Walcott, Aaron Ramsey was first choice on the right in 2015/16 but a fully fit Wilshere would make more sense cutting in on his left foot.

Olivier Giroud scored 24 goals for Arsenal last season but if Morata signed he would surely become first choice. Likewise with Koulibaly, Per Mertesacker and Gabriel both struggled for form last season and a big money addition at the back would be likely to go straight in to the starting XI.

Mohamed Elneny only joined the club in January but had already established himself in the side by the end of the season.

Like Xhaka, who also made his name in Europe at Basel, the Egyptian is able to contribute to all phases of play and so offers a more balanced central partnership.

Ramsey offers more than Wilshere defensively regardless of where he is playing and has proven himself effective on the right, even if he doesn't like playing there.
