Kakamega residents rescue two-day-old dumped baby

Residents of Shing'oto village in Kakamega Sunday morning found a two-day-old infant dumped on a river bank.

The toddler was found by Sylvanus Asudi as he headed to work at around 6am. "The baby was only wrapped in a tattered skirt and placed by the river bank," he said.

Shisele location Assistant Chief Caleb Murunga said he had launched investigations to identify the baby's mother.

"Once I gather more information, I will forward the report to the police to take action. If the baby's mother is found, she risks being prosecuted for cruelty. This is the first case of a dumped baby being found alive. Others are usually dead," said Mr Murunga.

The baby was taken in by the family of Isaack Ndude.

"It is not right to kill a child. Some children who are abandoned are usually out of incest but for this case, we are not sure. I wonder how people can be so inhuman to abandon such a beautiful soul. I will take care of this beautiful daughter the way have been taking care of my children who are all mature," said Mr Ndude's wife, Finike.

The family named the baby Blessing.

"The child was well cleaned up and wrapped in a torn stripped brown skirt. It seems she was placed there shortly before 6am, as she was not wet. I will treat her as my own blood," Ms Finike said.
