IEBC receives Sh560m from EU for 2017 election preparations

Nairobi, Kenya: As Kenya prepares to hold its second elections since the coming into force of the Constitution of Kenya 2010, The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Kenya in conjunction with the Independent Electoral and Boundaries (IEBC) have developed the “Strengthening the Electoral Processes in Kenya Project (SEPK)” framework for assistance to electoral activities for Kenya.

The project aims at strengthening citizen participation and engagement in the electoral process; strengthening the legal and institutional framework for elections to ensure transparency and accountability as well as contributing to free, fair and just elections and strengthening the elections justice sector by collaborating with stakeholders including political parties and the judiciary.

In support of the project, the European Union has given Sh560 million towards the elections basket fund managed by UNDP.

The signing ceremony was held today Thursday February 2016 in Nairobi

Among dignitaries present were: The Chairman of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Issack Hassan; Ambassador of the EU Delegation to Kenya, H.E Stefano-Antonio Dejak; UNDP Resident Representative Mr. Michel Balima, Government of Kenya Officials including those from the National Treasury & Attorney General’s Office & IEBC Officials.
