Nairobi, Mombasa get new police commanders as government reshuffles national administration

New police commanders and County Commissioners have been named in changes announced by government yesterday.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery and Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet made the changes yesterday saying they will be held accountable for any problems in their regions.

“This deployment takes effect immediately and all officers are required to report to their new stations not later than September 6, 2015,” said Nkaissery.

The changes brought confusion in the service as some of the officers who were last week deployed by outgoing Deputy Inspector General of Police Grace Kaindi were left out or replaced.

Most police commanders were not moved.

Most notable was Nairobi where a new County commissioner and county commander were named. The new commissioner is Godfrey Mwaura while the commander will be Japheth Koome who has been a deputy director of planning in police.

Outgoing Nairobi commander Benson Kibui will be promoted and be posted elsewhere, probably GSU, said a source.

The new Mombasa County Commander is Francis Wanjohi Mwangi who is a former presidential escort commander.

His movement to Mombasa means the changes that Kaindi made last week in which she named Tito Kilonzi as the commander have been nullified.

Mandera County Commissioner Alex Nkoyo was moved to Kiambu in the same capacity and replaced by William Kiprono. Mandera leaders had been calling for the removal of Nkoyo.

The new Nakuru County Commissioner is Joshua Nkanatha while James Kianda is for Garissa, Michael Ole Tialal (Wajir), Peter Okwanyo (Tana River), Joseph Ole Sosio (Taita Taveta), Fredrick Ndambuki (Lamu), Esther Maina (Embu), Stephen Ikua (Turkana), Birik Mohamed (Samburu), Julius Mathenge (Machakos), Moffat Kangi (Marsabit), Joseph Keter (Kilifi), George Natembea (Isiolo) and Tharaka Nithi (Amoit Florence).

Others are Bernard Kinyua (Kirinyaga), Fredrick Makokha (Nyandarua), Onesmus Musyoki (Nyeri), Wilfred Nyagwaga (Meru), Pauline Dola (Makueni), Boaz Cherutich (Kitui), Wilson Wanyanga (West Pokot), Anne Gakuria (Vihiga), Lucy Mulili (Kakamega), Chege Mwangi (Kisii), J Chepchieng (Migori), John Elungata (Kisumu), Matata Seif (Trans Nzoia), Magu Mutindika (Narok), Hersama Kello (Kajiado), Apolo Okelo (Laikipia) and Abdi Hassan (Uasin Gishu).

The changes were announced in the presence of National Police Service Commission Chairman Johnston Kavuludi and Interior PS Monica Juma and head of immigration Gordon Kihalangwa.

Nkaissery said they rolled out the e-visa system which will enable improve efficiency in service delivery and provide real time information on prospective visitors.

“Further, the system is infusing integrity into our immigration management and significantly enhances the security of our nation,” said Nkaissery.
