Kisii County initiates E-waste management

The county government in partnership with the Kisii University and the East African Compliance Recycling (EACR) has launched an E-waste management collection centre at the varsity.

In the arrangement, the university has provided a collection site while the county has offered a forklift and baling machines.

EACR on the other hand has given a waste collection container. The project aims at keeping the environment clean and creating a sustainable livelihood for the locals.

The project makes Kisii the first town in Africa to have an E-waste recycling plant.

Speaking at the university last week, Environment Cabinet Secretary Judy Wakhungu said the model will connect the collectors to the global markets and provide a fair and transparent price to ensure they get the maximum value for the waste.

"I look forward to more plants coming up in the region so that our neighbours will also have a safe way of disposing their waste," said Prof Wakhungu.

Governor James Ongwae said his government was in the process of enacting legislation to enable the protection and collection of a clean and healthy environment.

"The Kisii County Solid Waste Management Bill, 2015 has been presented to the assembly and is posed for the second reading," he said.
