Diploma and certificate holders neglected by employers

Most of the diploma and certificate youth holders are tarmacking in towns and offices in search of employment but every company or firm they knock and hand over their papers to turns them down. “We will contact you soon,“  This is what most HR managers say to the applicants to turn them away.

Nairobi City is highly populated due to availability of 'vibaruas' which at least puts bread on the table for a few of them. Construction sites in most cases have been the source of livelihood for the graduates.

Private and public universities are battling for diploma and certificate students who scored C plain and below in their Kenya certificate of Secondary education (KCSE). These students finish their courses and gain experience in their internship programs. I honestly think they have a lot of experience and high quality qualifications compared to degree students. But do these varsities consider the dream of these students after their studies? Where will they get employment or are these universities only interested in money in terms of school fees?

For the past one month, I have been going through job adverts on newspapers, listening to radio and TV for employment adverts but the qualifications needed do not favour any Diploma or certificate holders. Most companies are looking for degree holders and above. Where will the Diploma and Certificate holders get employed?

Not only does the level of study or qualifications matter, but the age factor locks out most youth from employment as well.

Due to unemployment, most of the youth have decided to join terrorist groups and engage in crime to earn a living. Thank you for National Youth Service employment opportunities but only a few slots are available for the lucky ones. The government should keenly look into the menace of unemployment otherwise this country will be a mess.

"Who do you know? Do you have a relative here? How much do you have in your pocket for employment? “These are the kind of questions asked in most offices when one approaches them for employment.

Aren’t diploma and certificate holders going to waste? If the government and Kenyan companies don’t address this issue on qualifications, then this nations is doomed.
