Health & Science

Muthei primary and mixed day secondary schools in Mwala District are set to benefit from 8 GB free internet data from Airtel Kenya in a Sh50 million grant that will benefit select primary and secondary schools in Machakos County.

Airtel’s Sales and Distribution Manager Mr. Brian Kisila said the program is among the many projects that the company is undertaking as a responsible corporate partner and will encompass donating furniture and connecting schools to internet to facilitating e-learning.

Muthei Primary School benefited from furniture donation worth Sh625,000.

He said that the 8 GB data internet connection has a capacity of serving 15 computers and is to be in place every month at the expense of the company. He added that the company would work with the County Government in reaching the most deserving schools.

“The company will be catering for the monthly reconnection fee of the internet but upon monitoring how the internet was frequently being used”, he said.

Kisila however expressed concern over the worrying trend of declining standards. He called on stringent measures to reverse the trend.  “I am worried that in the near future this region will lack leaders should education standards continue dwindling,” he said.

He also cited how strong winds blew off the roof of a school and affected learning.

Saluting Airtel’s gesture, the school Head teacher Mr. Sylvester Ngulu saidschool infrastructure is an area of great concern, which they have paid serious attention to as a sector.

Ngulu disclosed that pupils should not study under deplorable conditions and succeed academically noting that time has come to join hands for the merit.

“The quality of a school’s physical environment directly affects both the motivation and behavior of teachers as well as learning, discipline, and attention levels of the students.” He said.

Ngulu added that the goal of infrastructure development in schools is to increase school attendance, motivation and academic performance of schools.
