Section of CORD leaders want President Uhuru Kenyatta to defy ICC summons

KISUMU, KENYA: Some members of the opposition have joined their Jubilee alliance counterparts in asking President Uhuru Kenyatta to defy the International Criminal Court (ICC) summons.

Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) members including Edick Anyanga (Nyatike) Chris Wamalwa (Kimimini), Opondo Kaluma (Homa Bay Town) and Richard Onyonka (Kitutu Chache South) dismissed the order, terming it a strategy to divert attention from a case threatened with collapse.

Although the coalition has not taken an official position over the matter, its  members who spoke to The Standard said the ICC directive is ill intended.

Mr Anyanga asked Uhuru to ignore the summons and instead focus on developing the country.

"ICC should let President Kenyatta to run the country without any interference; the court should come out clearly and explain to Kenyans who coached and paid the witnesses to fix Uhuru and his Deputy William Ruto," Anyanga said.

He added: "It is embarrassing that after shocking revelations from ICC witnesses that they were paid to fix Ruto, and the confession from the prosecutor herself that she does not have enough evidence to sustain the charges against Uhuru, the court still goes ahead to summon the President."

According to Mr Wamalwa, President Kenyatta has co-operated with ICC, saying the summons are malicious.
