Moi asks South Sudan leaders to stop war

Kenya: Former president Daniel Moi has appealed to South Sudan leader Salva Kiir and the opposition’s Riek Machar to stop the war in their country and negotiate for sustainable peace.

Mr Moi made the appeal yesterday ahead of the forthcoming Inter-governmental Authority on Development-led session to find a lasting solution to the South Sudan crisis.

He appreciated the steadfastness of President Uhuru Kenyatta in the quest for peace in the war-torn country and the region as a whole.

The former president exhorted the two South Sudanese leaders to focus on the dreams and hopes of their people as expressed in the overwhelming vote for secession and self-determination.

“The people of South Sudan need peace, development, and their dignity and self-worth in order to become a proud member of the community of nations,” he said, pointing out that the continued internal bloodbath was a negation of the people’s hopes.

Moi also asked other regional leaders to keep up efforts to look for lasting peace in the new state.
