Police officers wounded, robbed of gun in Kwale county

KWALE, KENYA: Three police officers were wounded and robbed of a gun in a machete attack at a homestead in Kinango, Kwale County.

The three who include a female police corporal were attacked with a machete by a suspect they had arrested and tried to interrogate over unclear issues.

Police say the officers lost an AK47 rifle loaded with 30 bullets to the attacker during the Wednesday morning incident.

Kinango OCPD James Mutungi  said on Thursday they had arrested the suspect and recovered the weapon.

"We have the suspect in custody together with the gun he had taken away. We are looking for more suspects," said Mutungi on the phone.

It is not clear how the officers fell into the trap of the attacker. But other colleagues said the officers had accompanied the suspect to his house when he emerged with a machete and attacked them.

Coast region head of CID Henry Ondiek and his regular counterpart Robert Kitur visited the area on Wednesday and held a long closed door meeting before leaving.

"We have met the officers here to discuss how we can handle the situation as we investigate the matter," said Ondiek.

Kwale is part of the areas where the Mombasa Republican Council gang operates and it is not clear if the attacker is a member.
