Deputy President William Ruto’s spokesman car recovered 24 hours after attack

NAIROBI, KENYA: A Toyota Prado that was stolen from Deputy President William Ruto's spokesman David Mugonyi has been recovered in pipeline area, Nairobi.

Police say the car was found abandoned in the area on Thursday morning almost 24 hours after he was attacked.

Mugonyi was driving into his compound on Tuesday night when four gunmen who were waiting at the gate near St George’s Girls School in Nairobi struck. They drove with him around the city and robbed him of his mobile phone, Sh120,000 and other personal valuables before abandoning him near JKIA. Mugonyi was slightly injured in the robbery.

The attackers first claimed they did not know him, then said they had been sent to him, and demanded Sh1 million. From the 10pm incident, they would drive around with the spokesman of the holder of the second most powerful office in Kenya, till well after 1am.

All the while, they received and transferred money sent through Mugonyi’s M-Pesa account by friends who tried to reach the former Nation Media Group writer. Security sources revealed the Deputy President was briefed and it is believed he in turn informed the President. They added to rescue plans and phone tracking by involving the State security team.
