Kenya Ports Authority gets nod to import cranes

KENYA: Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) cargo handling modernisation project is back on course after it was given green light to acquire three ship-to-shore gantry cranes.

The acquisition of the Sh2.4 billion cranes, which is expected to facilitate faster cargo loading and offloading at the port, was stopped after one of the firms that were involved in the bidding process challenged the tender process.

The German firm, Kocks Kranes GMBH, which moved to the Public Procurement Administrative Review Board (PPARB) to challenge the award of the tender to the Irish firm M/S Liebherr Container Cranes said the port managers had flouted the Public Procurement and Disposal Act 2005.

The operation and efficiency at berth 19, which was commissioned by three East Africa heads of state led by President Uhuru Kenyatta in August this year, was pegged on the acquisition of the new cranes.

In a ruling dated October 12, PPARB however dismissed Knocks Kranes’ push for a review of the tender process saying it was above board.
