Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission sets by-election date for Siaya, Kibwezi West

NAIROBI, KENYA: By-elections for the Siaya County Governor, Kibwezi West and Matungulu Members of the National Assembly and four County Assembly Representatives will be held on 17th October, 2013.

The Wards are Ilima in Kaiti Constituency, Kahawa Sukari (Ruiru), Mnagei (Kapenguria) and Benane Ward in Lagdera Constituency, Garissa County.

In a gazette notice, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has given Political Parties up to  September 2 to finalize their primaries and determine intra-party disputes arising from nomination of their candidates.

In Matungulu Constituency and the four County Assembly Wards, candidates will submit their nomination papers to respective Returning Officers on 16th and  September 17. The official campaign period will run from 18th September to 15th October, 2013.

For Siaya County and Kibwezi West Constituency, candidates are required to submit their nomination papers to respective Returning Officers on 19th and 20th September. The official campaign period will run from 21st September to 15th October, 2013.

Siaya County is made up of six constituencies namely Ugenya, Ugunja, Alego Usonga, Gem, Bondo and Rarienda with a total of 311,919 registered voters.

Kibwezi West Constituency is in Makueni County and has a total of 54,811 registered voters spread across 149 polling stations while Matungulu Constituency is in Machakos County and has 47,838 registered voters in its 101 polling stations.
