Parliament approves team to vet Cabinet

Nairobi, Kenya: Members of the Committee on Appointment have been picked paving way for appointment of President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto to appoint Cabinet Secretaries.

The House Business Committee on Tuesday morning picked 28 members to the key committee that will vet Cabinet Secretaries and presented the names to parliament.

Mr Aden Duale, the majority leader in the National Assembly tabled the list of the members of the committee and moved a motion for its adoption.

Among those appointed are Speaker Justin Muturi, Deputy Speaker Dr Joyce Laboso, Duale, Deputy Majority Leader Dr Naomi Shabaan, Minority Leader Francis Nyenze and Deputy Minority Leader Jakoyo Midiwo.

Members of Parliament who will sit in the committee are Jackson Kiptanui, Issac Ali Shaban, Roselinda Soipan, Katoo Ole Metito, Jamleck Kamau, Amina Abdallah, Cecily Mbarire, Moses Cheboi, Nelson Gaichuhie, Boniface Gatobu and David Wafula.

Other MPs are Esther Murugi, Ibrahim Sane, Mishi Juma Khamis, Manson Nyamweya, Maj Gen (Rtd) Joseph Nkaissery, Abass Ahmed Ibrahim, Chrisantus Wamalwa, Maj. (Rtd) Marcus Mutua, Stephen Mule and Ken Obura.

Forming of the list has set the stage for Uhuru and Ruto to forward the list of Cabinet Secretaries to parliament for vetting in line with the constitution.

Unlike before, Parliament has a key role in vetting appointees to the cabinet and members of the public are also expected to take part in the process.
