MOMBASA, KENYA: A police officer was Monday morning injured in a petrol bomb attack on Kiembeni police station, Kisauni, Mombasa.

Police say the victim was on duty at the report office when unknown people hurled the bomb into the station.

Coast police boss Aggrey Adoli says there were slight damages at the office and that the officer was slightly injured.

“We do not know the motive of the attack which took place at about 4.20 am but our officers are on the ground investigating. It could be normal criminals,” he said.

Other officials in the area said there were gunshots soon after the attack but Adoli said the bullets were fired by other officers who were responding to the scene.

“Officers who were responding to the sounds of the petrol bomb fired to the air. There is not cause for alarm,” added Adoli.

Mombasa has been experiencing a lull in terror related attacks in the past months. The area is one of those that have experienced a series of attacks in the past year leaving dozens dead and several others wounded.

More security agents have been deployed there to ensure  security and especially ahead of the general election.
