- Miguna Miguna says the secession debate is a diversion aimed at distracting the real issues facing Kenya
- Homa Bay MP Peter Kaluma handed over his draft bill to IEBC seeking the secession of 40 out of 47 Counties
Author of ‘unpeeling the mask’ and former Nairobi gubernatorial candidate Miguna Miguna dismissed the secession bill presented by Homa Bay Member of Parliament Peter Kaluma.
Miguna said that the secession debate is a diversion aimed at distracting the real issues facing Kenya at the moment.
"The issue secession is diversionary, it is distracting from the real issues. I am a pan-Africanist, I am a nationalist, and I am not a secessionist. And I don't think at this time it is a useful debate. It is a debate that has been brought forward by people who do not want to discuss real issue. The real issue right now is electoral fraud,” said Miguna.
The Homa Bay Mp handed over his draft bill to Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) seeking the secession of 40 out of 47 Counties. The IEBC has given Mr Kaluma the green light to present the Bill either through Parliament or by collecting one million signatures in support of the initiative.
The bill states that all other counties should separate from Nyeri, Murang’a, Kiambu, Kirinyaga, Nyandarua, Embu, and Tharaka-Nithi. This 7 Counties make up the Mt. Kenya region.
“The objective of the Bill is to amend the Constitution to split to allow for the creation of a new state to give effect to the aspirations of the people of Kenya,” said the MP.
