7 Cool WhatsApp Features you probably never use

WhatsApp has over 1.2 billion users and you are definitely one of them if you are reading this. The app keeps attracting more people to join thanks to its simplicity of use and the constant addition of new features, but how many of these features do you actually use?Lately, there have been new features added to the app and in this article, I’ll highlight the coolest additions that you probably didn’t know they exist or you never use.Emoji searchingIf you ever get tired of scrolling left and right in order to find the perfect emoji to use in a WhatsApp conversation, well, you don’t need to. The latest version of the app now lets you use simple text-based searches to find that emoji you need. You don’t even need to enter the entire word, just a few characters and a list of suggestions will pop up for you to pick up from.Super easy text formattingYou probably know of the text formatting feature where you can bold, italicize and strikethrough texts. However, you need to remember a bunch of codes in order to make this work, something that has made many WhatsApp users skip this feature completely. It’s a cool addition, but the hassles involved in using it are not just worth it.In the new update, the hassles are no more. All you need is to tap and hold on the text you want to format and hit the three dots that appear in the top right-hand corner of your screen. A list of text formatting options will show up. Select what you wish to apply and that’s it! Cool huh!Unfortunately, these two features are still in the beta version, but it won’t be long before you get them via a Google Play Store update. Hang in there!Know the exact time your buddy read your messagesWe all know the blue ticks mean that one has read a message you sent them. But there’s more to these blue ticks. You can actually tell the exact time that this message was delivered and read. Simply tap and hold on the message in question and hit the small round info icon with an “i” at the top of the screen. This will open a new window with all the details you need to know.Save your precious dataMobile data is becoming costly with each passing day and you can do a few things to save some for the next day. WhatsApp chats, especially group chats, can be data hogs thanks to the many images, audio and video files that people exchange on the minute. You can save data used on the app by taking control of how media files are downloaded on the app. Go to Settings>Data usage>Media auto-download and from here, tap “When using mobile data” to check or uncheck the type of media files you’d wish to automatically download when using mobile data. There’s also an option to tweak the media auto-download options when on Wi-Fi and when roaming. This way, you’ll be in charge of the files you want to download by doing it manually, thus saving you some good data and money in the long run.Mark important messagesWhatsApp allows users to mark important messages so that it’s easy when you want to revisit them. If someone mentioned a novel idea that you’d want to get back to at a later time, simply long-press the message and tap the star icon that shows up at the top of the screen. To remove the message from your list of important messages, repeat the same procedure.To check out your starred messages, open WhatsApp and go to the menu (three dots at the top of the screen) and there you should see a “Starred messages” option.Use WhatsApp on a computerYour boss doesn’t like it when you are constantly on your phone? Worry not because you can still enjoy WhatsApp on your desktop. Open your web browser (Chrome or Firefox) and point the browser to the page web.whatsapp.com. Launch the app on your phone and tap on the menu, where you’ll see a “WhatsApp Web” option. Tap this option and use your phone’s camera to scan the QR code appearing on the web page opened on your computer to log in. But remember to logout when done because anyone who can access your computer will still be able to check your messages even after you leave. You can also download and install the WhatsApp for Windows app on your PC and use the same procedure to sign in. Pin favorite chatsDo you have favorite contacts that a day rarely goes by without saying hi to them? If yes, you can ensure that your chats remain on top of the screen so that finding them is easy once you open the app. Just tap and hold on a chat you started with this person and on the top of your screen, you’ll see a pin-like icon. Tap this icon and that’s it!
