Matiang’i speaks on police officers who damaged civilian’s truck in viral video

Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i on Sunday, May 10, spoke on the incident where police officers damaged a vehicle belonging to a civilian.

Taking to his Twitter account, the CS said he ordered Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai and the Nairobi Regional Police Commander, Philip Ndolo to present a report on the incident by 3.00pm.

“This alleged incident has been brought to my attention. Consequently, I have instructed the @IG_NPS Hillary Mutyambai, and the Nairobi Regional Police Commander, Philip Ndolo, to furnish me with a report by 1500hrs today (10th May),” said Matiang’i.

The incident, which is said to have occurred during curfew hours, angered a lot of Kenyans on social media who were quick to give their views.

In the video, the truck driver is heard telling the police officers that they will pay for the damages on his vehicle.

He even asks the officer who damaged his vehicle to accompany him to the police station and have his truck repaired.

A lady officer is then heard telling the truck driver that the officer who damaged his vehicle cannot accompany him to the police station because it is not allowed by the law.

“Hii gari yangu mtalipa nawaambia… twendeni police station mnilipa gari. Officer usijaribu kunichapa, I have all the documents. Msinishtue mimi, I have all the rights,” which loosely translates to, “You will pay for my care. Let’s go to the police station and pay for my car. Officer don’t try to hit me; I have all the documents. And don’t threaten me because I have all the rights,” said the truck driver.

When the truck driver threatened to post the video on social media, the officers could be heard telling him to go ahead.
