Nyandarua man writes Uhuru Sh10,500 cheque to help fight coronavirus

As cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) continue to rise in the country, a man from Ol Kalou town in Nyandarua County wrote a cheque to President Uhuru Kenyatta as his contribution in helping fight the pandemic.

David Ndung’u Wanjohi, an electronics shop owner, wrote a Sh10,500 cheque from Family Bank dated April 3, 2020.

Speaking to K24, Wanjohi came to his decision after calculating the essential foodstuffs a low-income family would averagely require in a month.

In his list, Wanjohi saw the Sh10,500 catering for a 90-kg bag of maize, a 45-kg bag of beans, a 50-kg bag of rice, 2kgs cooking fat, 2 bars of soap, salt, tea leaves, 5kgs sugar and Ksh1, 000 for cooking fuel.

Since Wanjohi did not know which bank President Uhuru uses let alone his bank account number, the business man settled for a bearer’s cheque.

According to Paisabazzar, a cheque bearer “can be used to be payable as Cash or bearer with a specific name. The bearer cheque does not have the word ‘bearer’ on the cheque and is payable over the counter to the bearer or the presenter of the cheque by the drawee bank.”

Wanjohi says he wishes the President would receive his donation, urging Kenyans not to wait on the government and help where they can in fighting the pandemic.

“I wish President Kenyatta receives the money, and channels it to the COVID-19 management fund. My action was inspired by the desire to help the Government at a time of crisis such as this one. My thinking is: we shouldn’t always wait for the Government to help; where we, as citizens, can, should chip in,” says Wanjohi.

On Saturday April 4, Health CS Mutahi Kagwe that the total number of coronavirus in the country stand at 126 and a total of 4 deaths.
