There was no pickpocketing incident in Voi, says NPS

The National Police Service has issued a statement rubbishing claims that one of the junior officers pickpocketed his senior counterpart during the arrest of Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko on Friday.

In a Sunday afternoon statement, the NPS further states that the officer under the spotlight is of high moral standards and incapable of engaging in pickpocketing.

It states: “The Officer in Charge of Traffic Voi has confirmed that he was not pickpocketed. Equally, the police command in Voi has confirmed that the officer in question is disciplined and of high integrity.”

NPS was responding to a video clip that has been circulating on social media platforms. In the 23 seconds-long clip, an officer can be spotted ‘waving his hand’ around a colleague’s pocket as if drawing something.  His colleague then responds quickly out of suspicion.

The statement has revealed that those who have circulated the video and captioned it as a pickpocketing incident have missed the context and the truth behind it.

“The video clip doing rounds on social media highlighting what appears to be an act of pickpocketing by a police officer is a misrepresentation of facts and untrue.”

Governor Mike Sonko was on Friday outmuscled and arrested by a group of police officers at a roadblock in Voi town, after which he was flown to Nairobi and detained over the weekend.

He is set to be charged with corruption, abuse of office and money laundering tomorrow.
