KNH responds after woman accused them of letting her mum die

The Kenyatta National Hospital has distanced itself from allegations of negligence made by a woman who claimed doctors let her mum die.

Through a video that went viral on social media, the unidentified woman stated that her mum was knocked down by a motorbike on August 28, 2018, after a church service and was rushed to the referral hospital.

She had suffered serious head injuries but according to her daughter, doctors at KNH seemed reluctant to attend to her despite the fact that her condition was deteriorating.

The 68-year-old was later pronounced dead and her daughter claimed her demise was down to negligence of medics at the hospital.

On Wednesday evening, KNH issued a statement confirming that the patient Hanna Njoki was indeed received but there were no ICU beds available.

“Unfortunately, there was no available ICU bed at Kenyatta National Hospital but treatment was initiated and the patient admitted in Ward 5B awaiting availability of an ICU bed.

The relatives were informed of lack of an available bed in ICU and were requested to seek for an ICU bed in another hospital, which they declined, citing lack of money to facilitate transfer of the patient to a private hospital,” read the statement in part.

The hospital exonerated itself from neglect, noting that if surrounding hospitals were equipped with ICU facilities, the scenario would have been prevented.

The daughter of the deceased had alleged that she was receiving threats after exposing the hospital and pointed a finger at Dr. Zawadi whom she said did not advise her accordingly.

“We pleaded with doctors, but they said there was no space. “They called me in the morning and told me to go and pick my mum's body.

“That is an unprofessional way to break such news,” she said.
