Uhuru should fix the crooked media once and for all- Mutahi Ngunyi as TV stations shut down

Controversial political analyst Mutahi Ngunyi says that President Uhuru Kenyatta should deal with the Kenyan media once and for all. Mutahi tweeted this remarks on his handle just minutes after Royal Media services owned Citizen TV, Standard Group's KTN News and Nation Media Group’s NTV stopped the live streaming of National Super Alliance (NASA) Coalition’s swearing-in ceremony.

The guild reported that the meeting was a violation of the law and did not bode well for the freedom of expression and press in the country. The meeting was attended by President Uhuru Kenyatta, His Deputy William Ruto, Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’I, ICT Secretary Joe Mucheru and Attorney General Githu Muigai.

In a counter statement, however, Vice Chairman Kenya Editors Guild Samuel Chege Maina said that the term dress down was a misrepresentation of facts. He explained that the meeting, which he attended was a fruitful discussion where everyone agreed that media freedom has to be accompanied by a high degree of responsibility.

As Kenyans were still debating on who was telling the truth, Citizen stopped airing while KTN News and NTV only stooped airing in free to air channels.

There are so many speculations surrounding the matter and Mutahi’s remarks only add more question as to whether the government shut them down for airing the ceremony. He termed the ceremony as a planned Coup de tat by Raila Odinga.
