Government closes Uhuru park ahead of Raila's swearing-in

The Nairobi County Government has issued a notice announcing the closure of the Uhuru Park as from Wednesday 23 January until further notice to allow phase improvements so as to ‘enhance recreational usefulness to its visitors’.

“Notice is hereby given to the General Public that Uhuru Park Grounds is scheduled to undergo phased improvement works in order to enhance recreational usefulness to its visitors. We apologize for any inconveniences caused,” read part of the notice issued by County Secretary Leboo Ole Morintat.

The National Super Alliance (NASA) had earlier announced that the swearing-in of the Coalition leader Raila Odinga will take place on January 30 at Uhuru Park.

The Nairobi Business Community and a church had also written to the City Hall seeking a permit to hold a meeting on the same day.

The Business Community Chairman Wilfred Kamau said that the county government had already given them the go-ahead to hold a free medical camp targeting street boys who would like to get circumcised on the said date.

According to the notice, no meetings or gatherings will be held during the closure of the park.
