Kids from the 90s enjoyed Christmas more than kids today

The festive season is here and we have crammed the shopping malls and supermarkets with our impulsive and unnecessary shopping, all in the name of making a good Christmas fete.

Today's Christmas is made up of people meeting in houses, showing off their latest gadgets, trying hard not to ignore each other as they scroll and pick at their smartphones’ screens.

Children have no idea why they have to travel miles to some old compound back in the village where they will have limited access to their Playstations and where they will be forced to play outside in the same compound with goats.

They will ride bikes at zero kilometers per hour as their parents watch them cautioning them against hurting themselves. They will wear helmets all through their stay and disinfect their hands whenever they greet any villager.

Nowadays, kids prefer to stay indoors with their heads buried in the video games.

These children will have a bad vibe about the season, they will wish it goes and never comes back. They are totally different from the kids who came before them, the kids from the 90s

Christmas back then used to be a big event. Every kid waited eagerly for the season. It is a season that brought so much joy to them.

Here are some of the things that made Christmas a major event back then;

Chapati

This meal has become popular and affordable nowadays such that it holds no specialty to it. Back then, chapatis were only made on special occasions, Christmas being the most special of all. Children used to be sent out to play while mothers busied themselves with making this delicacy and it would make Christmas a whole new reason to smile.

Decorations

Balloons those days were not a thing one would bump to like it is now. Shops would only stock balloons and other coloured papers during that season. Kids would then spend Christmas Eve blowing into balloons and hanging the coloured papers across ceilings and on the walls. This was a rare occasion and missing out on it meant waiting for another 365 days before setting eyes on a balloon.

 Xmas tree

Shops have made it easy now for people to have man-made Christmas trees for the season. Back then, kids would accompany male adults to the bush in search of the best looking cypress tree to bring home for Christmas. The task was adventurous and usually took hours before a perfect tree could be found.

Christmas clothes

Unlike nowadays when children get new clothes any other day, Christmas in the 90s meant a parade for who got the coolest Christmas clothes. Parents saved money for the treat and kids behaved well through the year in an attempt to outshine others during the ‘look at my dress’ fete during Christmas.

Baruti

No Christmas would be complete without the fireworks that boys would use to light up the sky at midnight. Kids back then would save throughout the year to buy the few sticks of the fireworks when Christmas came. The kid with the most sticks was admired by every other kid.

Visits

In the 90s, traveling was not as easy as it is now. Kids would wait for months to meet their cousins. Aunties and Uncles from far would visit, bringing in goodies with them. Families would use the time to bond as they celebrated together. Unlike now when people seclude themselves when they visit, kids would be left to play outdoors and unmanned all day long. For them, no Christmas was complete without scrapes and bruises.
