Unrest in Kenya Methodist University as staff are sacked

Forty workers from the Kenya Methodist University (KEMU) are up in arms for what they termed as unfair dismissal by the institution.

The workers comprising of lecturers, heads of departments and administration staff, claimed they had received a memo requiring them to prepare to vacate the premises.

Speaking on behalf of the affected staff in Meru, Micheni Muchai, who said he was an assistant lecturer, said the university wanted to sack them without due procedures.

“The current administrators have ran down the institution. Some campuses have been closed and the students asked to report to the main campus in Meru. Many part-time lectures have not been paid their dues since 2013. I have not been paid for the last two months,” claimed Muchai.

“Many of the workers are servicing loans. We do not know what will happen now that they have decided to sack us,” he said. They said they wanted a new Vice Chancellor and Chancellor, claiming Prof Henry Kiriamiti and Bishop Joseph Ntombura were ineffective in their roles.

Efforts to reach Prof Kiriamiti on his mobile phone were fruitiless as he did not pick calls or reply to text messages.
