Bishop Wanjiru among Kenyans feted at Regional Recognition Awards

Nairobi gubernatorial aspirant Bishop Margaret Wanjiru was on Monday among Kenyans who were honored for their outstanding contributions to different sectors in the country.

Bishop Wanjiru won an award for her contributions in the Logistics and Shipping sector as a Chief Executive Officer of her company which deals with shipping and logistics.

The award which was organized by Annelize Wepener, the CEO Global Limited seeks to recognize men and women leading and achieving in their regional sectors by dedicating their lives to the sector and the society and had a total of 4,908 nominees from across the continent.

She was joined in the podium by Ms Esther Passaris who was recognized for her initiative dubbed Adopt-A-Light which brought her both the country’s and regional awards in the Manufacturing and Engineering sector and Dr. Betty Gikonyo who was awarded in the Medicine sector.

Speaking at the awards, Bishop Wanjiru urged other leaders to be role models for the youths and provide leadership that has an open door policy to inspire the youth who are grappling with unemployment and crisis in leadership.

“We want leaders with an open door policy. Leaders who can be reached when needed and with track record and have proven themselves to be transparent, accountable and honest to inspire the youth in this country,” she said.

Ms. Passaris on her part called on the youth to see entrepreneurship as an opportunity, rather than only concentrating on seeking jobs to arrest the escalating unemployment rates in the country.

“Unemployment among the youths in this country is high and it continues to grow. We want the youth to start creating jobs rather than go seeking for jobs which may not be there for every one of them,” said Passaris.

Dr. Gikonyo who is the proprietor of Karen hospitals decried the habit of politicians using the youths in every election year and urged them to have an agenda for the youth. She also urged education stakeholders to overhaul the current system to embrace one which puts innovations and entrepreneurship at the forefront of learning.

“Politicians should have an agenda for the youth instead of misusing them. Our education system should also be overhauled to embrace science and entrepreneurship to help create jobs and help our idle youths. Corporates should also take university students for attachment and turn them into potential workers,” urged Gikonyo.

Other notable winners from Kenya were Dr. Florence Wambugu (Lifetime Achiever), Nardos-Bekele Thomas (Agencies and Regulatory Authorities), Christine Muthoni (Business and Professional Services), Dr. Paul Mwaniki and Kamamia Murichu (Chemicals, Pharmaceutical and Petrochemical), Ayub Gitau in Education and Training and Paul Njeri in Financial Services.
