A man raped a university student, killed her and hid her body under a bed, a witness has told the High Court.

Sergent John Shegu said yesterday that Elly Wanga Omondi killed Edinah Nyanchama Mogambi by a blow to the head with a piece of wood.

Testifying before High Court Judge Stella Mutuko, Mr Shegu said the murder occurred on March 25, 2012 at Mbotela Teleposta Staff Quarters in Nairobi. "She was raped and killed. After the investigations, I found out that she was hit by a piece of wood," Shegu said. He said the accused admitted he used the wood to hit the First Year student at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology. Her body was recovered under the bed in their bedroom after three days.

Shegu said Mr Omondi then removed a SIM card belonging to the deceased and threw it away. "Omondi led us to the place where he had thrown the SIM card and we recovered the phone in his house together with blue jeans and a grey T-shirt with stries," said Shegu.

Shegu added that his key informers were Safaricom, who provided the call data from the deceased's phone from March 25 to 28, 2012."On March 28, 2012, I received information that Omondi was seen entering the house of the deceased on March 25, 2012 at around 9.30am," said Shegu.

Saum Juma, a criminal investigator attached to Safaricom, yesterday produced four key exhibits of the call data record in court. She provided information of the deceased phone's outgoing and incoming calls and the geographical location they were coming from.
