Top cyclists to compete at Mombasa Buffalo event

Kenya's top cyclists will be in action on Sunday during the Mombasa Open Buffalo Mountain Bike competition at Bamburi's Butterfly farm.

Event organiser Mohammed Abdulaziz said the competition will be marking its sixth year since its inauguration.

"Cycling activities were affected by the Covid-19 outbreak in 2020. We held our fifth edition last year but under strict Covid-19 measures," said Abdulaziz in an interview in Mombasa.

He said 200 cyclists have confirmed participation with the number expected to swell before Sunday, saying there will be several categories for different age-groups.

"There will be 5km, 10km and 20km for different age-groups ranging from five years to 80 years. All the participants will be awarded certificates with the winners walking away with trophies and medals," said Abdulaziz.

Cyclists in Mombasa have been calling on the county government to create cycling lanes for them so that they can use bicycles as a way to reduce vehicle emissions and reduce traffic jams. [Ernest Ndunda]
