Court orders detention of eight suspects who locked Chinese in bedroom before robbing him

Eight people suspected of locking up a Chinese and his visitors inside a bedroom and robbing his cash were yesterday presented at Kibera law courts on a miscellaneous application.

The suspects namely, Isaac Mwomba Ogunda, Phelis Wanyala Musan, Phenina Njeri Komu, Lilian Amae Orini, Justus Obai Anyule, Ratmond Kipkirui Mibei, Japhet Ogamba Makori and Denis Opiyo Wambani committed the offense on 2nd August just thirty minutes past 7 pm.

The court, in a sworn affidavit, heard that the suspects who had masked themselves- with two of them holding a gun- gained entry into Chen Chao’s house through the main door which was open at the time.

The suspects found Chao taking dinner in the company of his other friends and house help. Chao and his team were all threatened with pistols before being forced to get into one of the bedrooms which was downstairs.

They were locked inside and Chao was robbed of Sh, 40,000. The suspects proceeded upstairs, took Chao’s safe box which had Sh, 200,000, one passport, Identification Card and some files.

The court further heard that the suspects escaped into a waiting car afterwards. The matter was reported at Spring Valley police station vide OB No. 41/02//08/2021 in a move that saw Police commence investigations and managed to arrest the suspects the following day.

While asking the court for more time, the officer in charge of the probe told the court that he needed more time to conduct a thorough search of stolen items and explore the possibility of recovering the firearms.

Additionally, he said, “I also need to obtain call data, from the service providers, record statements from the key witnesses and finally explore the recovery of the CCTV footage from the crime scene.”
