Woman discovers husband 'cheated' after spotting wedding announcement in paper

A woman who never understood why her marriage ended so abruptly was left stunned when she found out the truth through an announcement in the New York Times.

On 7 August, the newspaper ran an announcement for the  wedding  of Robert Palmer, 30, and Lauren Maillian, 35, who met at a New York Sports Club gym in January 2017 and who married in a small ceremony in front of 25 people.

But Nikyta Moreno claims that Robert was still married to her at the time he started dating his new beau Lauren.

Speaking to the New York Post Nikyta said: "According to the (New York Times) article, the couple, Rob and Lauren, started their relationship in January 2017.

"It also said that he had never been married. That was news to me — because I was his wife in January 2017.

"We split in late March of that year, officially divorcing in January 2018, and I never exactly understood why. Until I read about it in the Times."

The announcement detailed how Robert and Lauren bonded over their love for fitness over three and a half years ago.

Robert recalled how Lauren caught his eye not only because of her stunning looks but because she was one of the only women who lifted weights.

They got to talking and met up outside of the gym before making plans to see each other again where they spoke into the early hours.

Five months later the pair moved in together, and it wasn't long before he bonded with Lauren's kids from a previous relationship - the only former marriage mentioned in the article.

Almost two years after they met, Robert proposed and on August 2 of this year they got married.

But according to Nikyta, they'd split up two months after Robert first met Lauren.

Detailing her relationship with Robert, Nikyta said they first met in 2013.

They moved in together a few months later before marrying in a civil ceremony in December 2015.

The couple had planned for a bigger wedding in the summer of 2017, before Robert became distant.

After arriving home from a trip to Texas for his friend's wedding and to finalise their wedding details, he said he needed space.

Nikyta stayed with her friend for a week but when she returned he told her he wanted a divorce.

She likened the change in him to a light switch turning off, and even admitted wondering whether he had a medical issue that completely changed his personality.

Robert called it quits at the end of March 2017, before the divorce was finalised in January 2018.

She said: "He was my best friend, and my whole life was destroyed. But I knew something else was wrong. I suspected he had cheated on me, but when I confronted him about it, he never quite answered me."

Nikyta says her friends have since contacted The New York Times which later issued the correction: "An earlier version of this article misstated the previous marital status of the groom, Robert Palmer. Mr. Palmer had previously been married."

In response to the article Robert said the divorce between himself and Nikyta was both amicable and mutual, and that he was completely oblivious to any issue she had regarding their separation.

He also wished her the best.
