Balenciaga unleashes Sh140,000 towel skirt

As you spruce up your wardrobe this time of the year, you might need to check out Balenciaga’s Towel Skirt that goes for just Sh140,000.

The terry cotton towel is unisex and has two buttons on the inner part of the waistline. With an adjustable belt and hidden buckle, the towel skirt was made available for pre-order mid this week.

However, many internet users could not wrap their heads around its price tag, some saying they could easily stitch a similar towel in the comfort of their homes.

Others lauded Balenciaga saying it was an item that could quickly become popular among its clients.

“In economics, we’d say they are discovering the true demand curve. They are checking their customer base to see how elastic they are. If it’s a fairly inelastic demand curve of which it’s very likely to be. They won’t lose anything by being selling s*** like this, in actual fact…” one person wrote.

“I need customers like theirs,” another fan proclaimed.

Balenciaga is no stranger to online trolls and in late 2022, the company was slammed for introducing a ‘Trash Pouch’, inspired by a garbage bag, at Sh200,000.

Made out of calfskin leather and emblazoned with a logo, the bag made headlines at the time and the company’s creative director Demna said a little fashion scandal is good once in a while.

“I couldn’t miss an opportunity to make the most expensive trash bag in the world, because who doesn’t love a fashion scandal?” she told Women’s Wear Daily at the time.
