KRU mourns former Kenya Rugby Sevens player Allan Makaka

The Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) has mourned former Kenya Rugby Sevens player Allan Makaka.

Makaka, 38, died on the spot after a freak road accident along Mombasa Road. His car rammed into a trailer along the busy highway.

Makaka was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

His body was later removed from the damaged car and taken to the Montezuma Funeral Home.

“It is with deep sorrow that we have learnt of the passing of Allan Makaka following a traffic accident on Saturday 23 May 2020.

“A warm individual off the pitch, Allan’s death is indeed a huge loss to his family, friends, colleagues and the rugby fraternity.

"May God grant his family, friends, teammates and colleagues strength during this trying time. Rest in Peace Allan,” KRU said in a statement seen by GameYetu.

The former Kenya Harlequin star worked at the Royal Media Services Ltd (RMS) as the Business Manager in charge of Hot 96.

Royal Media Services Ltd confirmed Makaka’s death on its news Citizen TV website.

“Allan joined Royal Media Services on 1st February 2012 as a Business Executive and later became the Business Manager in charge of HOT 96, a position he has served with great dedication, passion and commitment.

“Allan has been instrumental in mentoring members of his team who have gone on to excel in their work. His friendship extended throughout the whole organisation. He embraced all and interacted freely with everyone.

“We have been in touch with the family to condole with them. We request your prayers and support to the family during this very difficult time,” said RMS Ltd HR Director Rose Wanjohi.

According to KRU, Makaka was part of the squad that played at the 2005 Rugby World Cup Sevens in Hong Kong and the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Australia.

He made a total of 57 appearances on the Sevens World Series, managing 28 tries and is ranked 21st overall amongst Kenya’s all-time try scorers on the World Series.

An alumnus of Mumias Boys Primary School, Musingu High School and the United States International University- Africa, he initially played his club rugby at defunct military side Ulinzi, winning back to back National Sevens Circuit titles in 2002 and 2003, making a name for himself with his searing pace and earning selection to the national sevens squad, Shujaa off the back of his performances.

He moved to Kenya Harlequin upon Ulinzi’s disbandment at the close of the 2004 season and featured in the Quins squads that won the National Sevens Circuit title in 2005 and 2006 and the 2008 Kenya Cup league title.
