Former Football Kenya Federation (FKF) president Sam Nyamweya has mourned former president Daniel arap Moi.

Nyamweya recalled 1992 memories and how Moi was a passionate sports fan.

“I want to take this opportunity to send my condolences to the Moi family. Moi is like a father and as a young person in 1992 we were able to support him. He was a great leader, he was humble, he could listen and could tell you where you have gone wrong.

“I think in my opinion; we have lost a great leader who put this country together. When I was secretary-general of Kenya Football Federation (KFF) in his reign, Moi never used to miss any international matches. He supported sports and helped the docket. He united Kenyans. We will miss him,” Nyamweya told KTN News.

Moi, a footballer in his youth will be remembered by Kenyans because he was a passionate fan of Kenyan football.

But also, being a self-styled professor of politics, he often surprised soccer fans by arriving at the various stadia in style whenever big matches were played.

He knew how to spice up his entry to fire up fans by asking the organisers to open all the gates and allow free entry.

‘Nyayo’ as he was popularly known was in his element when the ‘Mashemeji’ derby was on schedule.

Football fans would wait for him like children waiting for their father to come to their rescue.

The former president will be accorded a State Funeral with all appropriate Civilian and Full Military Honours being rendered and observed.

President Uhuru Kenyatta ordered that the nation observes national mourning and the national flag will be flown at half-mast throughout the State and other facilities of the Republic of Kenya abroad from the dawn of February 4, 2020 until sunset on the day of Moi’s burial.
