Betting firm Betway Kenya has announced its intentions to be the title sponsor of The Detour Golf Match Play finals, one of the most exciting amateur golf events in Kenya.

The betting firm hopes to inject Sh400,000 in the event.

Betway Detour Golf Championship tournament marks the culmination of a five-month Individual Match Play tournament that began last year in September.

The event, which has attracted 128 golfers from 20 different golf courses in the country, will be held at the par 72 18-hole Vet Lab Sports Club course on February 9.

“This sponsorship will bring Betway closer to the golfing community,” said Leon Kiptum, Betway Country Manager.

“Through this partnership, we are extending our commitment to different sporting communities, which now includes soccer, rugby, volleyball, golf and many others.”

Betway, a leading provider of online sports betting and casino entertainment in Kenya, has been striving to offer an easy-to-use avenue for sports fans to enjoy the thrills of sports betting.

In addition to providing a variety of online entertainment options, the betting firm is focused on community sports development.

Other projects include the Betway Talent Search, promoting women’s volleyball, sponsoring the Deaf Football Federation (DFF) among other initiatives.

Detour Golf is a virtual golf club that brings together all stakeholders in the industry including golfers, clubs, associations and service providers through an online social platform.

The members of Detour Golf are golfers from different home clubs spread out throughout East Africa, with this number projected to grow into other regions in Africa.

The competition began as a pool stage, where every week, players would register their scores with the top two in each pool eventually joining the golden league. The other two join the silver league, while the final two join the bronze league. The knockout stage requires each player to win his games to proceed to the next bracket.

In the finals under the golden league's main cup, Charles Wanjohi from Thika Sports Club will face-off with Kenneth Ndung’u Kiambu Golf Club. Larvin Asego of Golf Park will be up against his club-mate Anthony King’ori in the third place play-offs.

Under the Silver league, Sigona Golf Club’s Jimmy Kibugi will take on Jid Wanjohi from Kenya Railways Golf Club. As Golf Parks’ Nancy Wangari battles it out with Simon Karo in the Bronze league.

While in the subsidiary category, over 250 golfers will hit the fairways from as early as 6:15 am in search of fabulous prizes.

“This is one of the most exciting sponsorships that Detour has received in our six seasons. There are many synergies between Detour and Betway. They are both online platforms besides, being actively involved in the growth of sports in Kenya. We look forward to a fantastic event and to keep working together in future,” said James Kusewa the chairman of Detour Golf.
