Revealed: The eye-watering sum it would cost Manchester United to sack Jose Mourinho

The Portuguese saw his side slip to their third defeat of the season at home to Championship Derby on Tuesday night as they were dumped out of the Carabao Cup on penalties.

That came just three days after the Red Devils dropped points against newly-promoted Wolves at Old Trafford.

But it is his ongoing feud with Paul Pogba, a saga which is threatening to derail United's season, which is the biggest threat to his Old Trafford tenure.

Mourinho was fuming that Pogba uploaded a clip to his Instagram page from the stands as United were beaten by Derby, and cameras caught a frosty exchange between the pair at training on Wednesday morning.

It would appear unlikely that both men will stay at the club in the long-term, with Pogba continuing to be linked with a move away in January.

Barcelona head the race for his signature, with former club Juventus also in the running.

But, if United decide they would rather keep Pogba and look for a new manager, it will cost them a hefty sum.

Mourinho penned fresh terms at the Theatre of Dreams in January, worth around £13.5million-a-year, until the summer of 2020.

They would have to pay off the remainder of that contract, unless Mourinho decides to walk away of his own accord.

United go to West Ham in Saturday's lunchtime kick-off to face a buoyant Hammers side who are unbeaten in three and smashed eight past League Two Macclesfield on Wednesday evening.
