Luka Modric scooped the top prize at the Best FIFA Awards on Monday night, leaving Cristiano Ronaldo and Mohamed Salah in his wake.

The Croatian enjoyed a brilliant season in which he guided his nation to their first World Cup final and clinched a successive third Champions League with Real Madrid.

Modric was deserving of the award in the eyes of many, but Samuel Eto'o is convinced that the obvious candidate to win the top prize has been robbed.

The Cameroonian striker enjoyed his best years playing for Barcelona, from 2004 to 2009, in which he witnessed the emergence of one Lionel Messi.

The Argentina international didn't enjoy the best World Cup, and the Catalan club didn't do brilliantly in the Champions League this season, although they did win La Liga.

But despite this, Eto'o has made the point that while Messi is playing the game professionally then he is the best footballer on the planet. Full stop.

"Leo, for us, will always be the best player in the world ever," he told beIN SPORTS.

"The human beings have to choose and they chose those three players, who have done well this year too.

"But for people like me and others, it doesn't change the fact that Leo is the best player in the world ever."
