Manchester United star set to pen mega deal and make him one of best paid ever

Manchester United are confident David De Gea will commit his long term future to Old Trafford by agreeing a lucrative new contract.

The Spanish keeper has long been a target of Real Madrid, and fans had feared he could be tempted awa. His contract running down to just a year remaining, with an option for a year's extension.

The Bernabeu giants though, pulled off a transfer window coup by landing Chelsea's Thibaut Courtois for £35m just before the deadline, to ease the pressure on United.

The Manchester club have been involved in lengthy negotiations with the Spain international over a new deal for the past six months, and came to what they thought would be an agreement back in June.

That deal remains unsigned though, and Madrid still lurked in the background as a potential destination until they signed Courtois.

Now De Gea is expected to commit within the coming weeks, to a deal that could be worth in excess of £40m and would tie him to Old Trafford for at least the next five years.
