Tough welcome for K’Ogalo coach Kerr: Gor Mahia slump continues while Tusker, Nzoia prosper

Bandari deliver blow on new Gor Mahia coach as the cargo men knock K’Ogalo out of GOtv Cup

New Gor Mahia coach Dylan Kerr was given a rude welcome to Kenyan football as the 15 time Kenyan Premier League champions were knocked out of the GOtv Shield 6-5 on penalties by Bandari at Thika County Stadium, yesterday.

Holders Tusker edged out Palos in Meru to progress to the next round thanks to Jackson Macharia’s first half goal while Nzoia Sugar shook off their spirited hosts Coast Stima 6-5 on post match penalties after a barren draw in regulation time.

The Gor Mahia-Bandari was also forced into a direct shoot-out after a 1-1 stalemate also in regulation time.

Tanzanian import Cosmas Lewis made good use of Hassan Abdallah’s individual brilliance to break the deadlock in the 58th minute before enterprising Gor new signing Boniface Omondi drew K’Ogalo level in the 75th minute.

“It is not the type of results I expected ahead of Tanzania trip moreso after dominating the game. But that’s the nature of football. Penalties are like a lottery,” Kerr told Standard Sports after watching the match from the sidelines.

The dockers scored their penalties through Mwinyi Hamisi, Cosmas Lewis, Noah Abich, Anthony Wambani, Michael Luvutsi and Felly Mulumba with Duncan Otewa, Wilberorce Lugogo and Siraj Muhammad missing their kicks.

On the other hand, Meddie Kagere, Boniface Omondi, Harun Shakava, Wellington Ochieng and Musa Mohamed scored Gor Mahia penalties as Francis Kahata, Boniface Oluoch, Kenneth Muguna and Ernest Wendo squandered their attempts.

Gor started the game the better side threatening in the fourth minute, but Bandari goalkeeper Wilson Obungu made two saves in succession to deny Meddie Kagere.

Jacques Tuyisenge then beat Obungu, but Congolese defender Felly Mulumba recovered fast to make a goal line clearance.

In the 20th minute Bandari’s Darius Msagha saw his free kick go over the bar before Gor launched a counter attack only for Karim Nizigiyimana’s close range attempt to go wide.

K’Ogalo had to make an early substitution in the 25th minute with new signing Boniface Omondi replacing injured Tuyisenge.

Hassan Abdallah then delivered an inviting cross to Cosmas Lewis on the half-hour mark after a brilliant run on the right but the Tanzanian ballooned his effort.

Msagha could have put Bandari ahead in the 41st minute, but his shot in the box went directly into goalkeeper Boniface Oluoch’s hands.

Moments later, Obungu pulled off a double fine save from George Odhiambo’s attempt to ensure the match goes into the break goalless.

In the 58th minute overalapping defender Hassan raced down the right flank, shrugged off the challenge of a couple of Gor defenders, dummied the advancing goalkeeper before setting up Lewis, who made no mistake to place the ball into an empty net.

A few minutes later, Obungu came to the dockers’ rescue as he stopped Kagere’s attempt from Nizigiyamana’s delivery.

But after a series of raids, Omondi drew level on his debut in the 75th minute forcing the match into penalties.

In an earlier match at the same venue, National Super League side Bidco United saw off Rain Forest 2-0 as Wazito edged out former Kenyan Premier League club KCB 4-3 on post match penalties after a 1-1 draw in regular time at Camp Toyoyo.

It was the same result in the second match at Toyoyo as Vihiga United beat Ushuru 4-3 on post match penalties after a barren draw in the normal time.
