Njoro's Indraj lands Merica golf championship top prize

Handicap 24 Indraj Singh dropped two pars at holes three and six, but still scored 43 stableford points to win the Merica Group of Hotels Golf tournament at the par 73 Njoro Golf and Country Club over the weekend.

Indraj, who also missed a birdie at hole 18, scored 23 points in the first nine and 21 in the back nine, to beat a field of 87 golfers drawn from Nakuru and Njoro.

"This is wonderful. I am delighted with this victory on a day when course conditions were favourable and holding quite well. However, it did not come on a silver platter. I have been training very hard for this tournament," said the 27-year-old golfer.

"I have been training at this course, which I'm familiar with. That is why I was able to post the impressive results."

Asked about who inspires him in this gentleman's game, he said; "My friends and family members. Kudos to my uncle Giginder Podam Singh."

P. Njuguna, who had 41 points, finished second, thus winning a dinner offer for two at Merica Hotel.

Steve Thiongo, who scored 40 stableford points, was third.

J. Kibore, with a score of 19 stableford points, was the first nine winner, while Njoro's David Mathai, who had 23 stableford points, was the second nine winner.

Mathai also got 17 golf balls after he was named among the five two club winners alongside Charles Angwenyi, Charity Wachira, S. Soguk and S. Malik.

While addressing the golfers, Merica Group of Hotels General Manager Faraj Kibet promised to sponsor a similar tournament next season.

"We'll come back next year for a similar competition, God Willing. We must give back to the society," he said, drawing a warm round of applause from the golfers. [Ben Ahenda]
