Police are investigating the vile abuse directed at Jesse Lingard following Manchester United's FA Cup win at Derby.

Lingard was targeted by supporters gathered around the United team bus as it prepared to leave Pride Park following their 3-0 victory on Thursday night.

United condemned the appalling insults directed towards Lingard and have contacted Derby officials in the hope of identifying those responsible.

The incident came just 24 hours after Eric Dier climbed into the stands to tackle fans involved in an altercation with his brother Patrick after Tottenham lost on penalties at home to Norwich in the FA Cup.

Insults hurled at Lingard included: “Jesse, you're s***, Jesse you're w***. Jesse you're s***, Jesse f*** off”, while one fan was also heard to shout “zero goals and zero assists in 2019” towards the midfielder, who had stopped to sign autographs before boarding the bus.

Lingard's United team-mate, Luke Shaw, appeared at the open door of the bus and confronted the group of fans in front of him after hearing the sustained volley of insults.

United feel the abuse directed towards Lingard crossed a line and have made clear their intention to find those responsible, with Derby understood to be studying CCTV footage of the area where the incident occurred. A statement from Derbyshire Constabulary said: "We are aware of a video that was taken outside Pride Park following last night's game between Derby and Manchester United and enquiries are ongoing."

Lingard has struggled for form in the past year and did not register a goal or assist in the Premier League last year, and lost his England place as a result.

But United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has stood by the 27-year-old and offered him his full support throughout his battle to rediscover his best form.
