Police disperse anti-repeat election protesters in Mathare

Voting in Mathare Constituency started well at 6am but with low turnout.

The Standard witnessed poor turnouts at Kiboro Primary School and Mathare Special Training Centre.

Rains disturbed the voting as few eager voters braced the cold and mud to vote.

According to the Mathare Constituency Returning Officer Japheth Mwololo, turnout was very low and by 10.am, it was 20 in the Opposition stronghold.

At around 10am police engaged youths, who had barricaded the road with stones and burning wooden structures, in running battles.

A police officer sustained head injuries from a stone hurled by a rooftop demonstrator. He was driven away in a Medicines Sans Frontieres (MSF) ambulance for treatment.

Several demonstrators were also injured according to one MSF staffer who requested anonymity because he is not allowed to speak to media.
