Leaders want reforms at IEBC after Kajiado bribe claims

KAKAMEGA: The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has proved its inability to tackle election malpractices, if the just-concluded Kajiado by-election is anything to go by, leaders from the Western region have said.

MPs John Mbadi (Suba), Andrew Toboso (Butere), Bishop Benaiah Salala (Mumias ACK diocese), Abdalla Ateka (Chair Council of Imams in Kenya), Busia Majority Leader Josephat Wandera and nominated MCA Nur Mohammed said the electoral body has failed to use its legal mandate to deal with bribery allegations.

"As CORD we are not happy with IEBC. It has failed to act using the laws under its jurisdiction. It appears helpless in tackling bribery claims," Mr Mbadi said.

He continued: "There was open use of State equipment. They still have a long way to go to restore the confidence of Kenyans."

They termed Elijah Memusi's (ODM) win as an indication that Kenyans can no longer be intimidated or bought by Government.

Mr Toboso said the outcome of the mini-poll is proof that Kenyans have come of age and they can exercise their democratic rights.

"As ODM and CORD members, we are glad we delivered the seat. We co-operated as a team and the resultant synergy and close supervision was worth it. We applaud our MP Memusi," he stated.

He said their strategy worked, adding that it remains the strongest party in the country.

Mr Salala said the Opposition's victory has sent a strong message to the Jubilee administration that Kenyans are dissatisfied with their leadership especially due to lack of inclusiveness in public appointments.

"I want to congratulate Memusi for his victory. The people of Kajiado Central have been taken for granted for years and the Government should ensure distribution of resources and appointments equally. Kenyans want leaders who are genuine and ready to listen," said Salala.

Mr Nur said ODM's victory was a clear indication the party was strong and ready to win the next General Election.

"Kenyans are no longer confident with this Government because of the continued insecurity, corruption and tribalism that is rampant in the country," he said.
