Nyanza Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) officials have endorsed Homa Bay Senator Otieno Kajwang for the party’s vice chairman position.

The party officials said Kajwang is an able leader who has shown he can propel ODM to greater heights.

Kajwang launched his bid yesterday at a hotel in Kisumu joining three others that have declared their interest in the same seat. The meeting was attended by ODM party officials from Nyanza.

Siaya ODM chair, Oloo Kanda said they are supporting Kajwang because of his good leadership skills and discipline.

“We believe that Kajwang will bring everybody together and work for the benefit of the party,” said Kanda.

His Nyamira counterpart, Stephen Nyakerega, said people South Nyanza have seen first-hand the deeds of the Homa Bay senator.

“He is a leader I have known for a very long time and I believe he will perform well in the NEC,” said Nyakerega.

The same sentiments were made by Kisumu branch chair, Dave Okwatch.

Speaking in the event, Kajwang said the any party member is free to contest for any position. Kajwang is the fourth person after Nominated Senator Janet Ong’ era, Eldas MP Adan Keynan and Turkana Governor, Josephat Nanok also declared their interest in the same position.

He dismissed claims that most of the seats were a preserve for Nyanza and Western regions.

Kajwang reckoned that he decided to go for the vice chair position because regional and ethnic balance will play a major role in forming the next office of ODM.

Nyando MP Fred Outa has also hinted that his main aim is to sit in the NEC but did not disclose which seat he will be vying for.

The party elections will be held on February 28 and March 1, during the National Delegates Convention (NDC). The election will be throughsecret ballot and not acclamation as it has been the norm.

Kajwang condemned the government over the manner it has handled the standard gauge railway tender terming it unlawful since it was not competitive.

“There is nothing to investigate about the scandal because it was not competitive and therefore should be withdrawn,” said Kajwang. He added the railway will help Kenyans, but corrupt government are using the project to enrich themselves.
